A Jonathan Edwards-inspired self-portrait

Stolen from Jonathan Edwards:

The God that holds me over the pit of hell, much as one holds...some loathsome insect over the fire, abhors me, and is dreadfully provoked: his wrath towards me burns like fire; he looks upon me as worthy of nothing else, but to be cast into the fire; he is of purer eyes than to bear to have me in his sight; I am ten thousand times more abominable in his eyes, than the most hateful venomous serpent is in ours. I have offended him infinitely more than ever a stubborn rebel did his prince; and yet it is nothing but his hand that holds me from falling into the fire every moment...

Hey - you're doing the book thing, right? You're Kafka! Except with a new bug.

Was it something we said? Do you need a motivational speech?

Maybe you should convert to Catholicism.

Okay, "Chelsie." I came very close once before. Who knows maybe it will happen in the future. But my question to you, Mr. Ratzinger, is when you started becoming a regular reader of the blog.

I am distraught that I put no punctuation between "knows" and "maybe." Response fail.

haha I get it. He's the pope!

Only semi-regularly. I get bored at work, read news sites and blogs for hours and hours and decide that I like to read a little benign crazy every once in a while =). I myself am fairly close to converting. They won't baptize me unless I convert and I don't want an infidel (that's what they call us Protestants) to have my possible salvation in his possibly unauthorized hands... Now I'm going to go google Mr. Ratzinger.

Pope Ratzinger?...

What would a feminist do if she became pope? Not wanting to give up her last name....

"No really, I'll go by Pope Ignacious Bono-Jones the Third."

They couldn't let that happen. So in the meantime it's just more of the Man arbitrarily holding the status quo under his thumb....

Ok let me rework that one. So it would more likely be, for example, Pope Anna Tompkins-Ignacious.

That's more realistic. I mean they wouldn't let a married lady be pope.

And by "they" I of course mean the Cardinals.

The world is ready.

I thought you reserved the slow motion verbal train wrecks for me, man. Thanks for filling in!

Andy D. said...

Yeah that was basiclly the verbal equivalent of the old film footage where that guy shoots a cannonball at himself. Played at about one frame per second..... You can see every excruciating ripple in his skin, as his body is slammed into and through the brick wall (and the one-inch thick "mattress" placed ad meager protection) behind himself. After pulling the cannon string himself.

Me, cannonball guy. Blog, the wall. Pope Tompkins, the ball.

You? The guy who's laughing off-frame, having done it six times to himself previously.

Mike Bailey said...

Six times? Dang, that's pretty generous of you. I think you forgot to qualify it with a temporal dimension like, "just yesterday" or "in any given day."
