Dear World--

This photo is from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in gray Cleveland, Ohio. I know this is not my best effort. And certainly it revisits a recurring motif in my collection. But all motifs are recurring, right? That's what makes them motifs.

So please don't hate me and my lack of originality. And please don't hate me and my mediocrity.

I'm tired.

Yours,

Salieri

Oh, your first comment was perfect! Loved it. Because it's true!

Do you understand, Andy, how freakin' nerdy we were as high schoolers?!? What high school kids quote Amadeus back and forth to one another?!

Bought a photo at Chiaha yesterday, but for the most part was bored by what I saw. I think your work is much stronger than anything there. I brought my dad along...and he made a comment I thought you would like. He said "I thought you like art...not photography". : )
(I did correct him..)

What do you mean, "in high school"?...

Julie: In general your dad is right, of course. But then again I think most artists do art aren't such great shakes, either. Which isn't to say they aren't doing art. So it turns on (a) what counts as art, and (b) what counts as good art. Clearly the two questions are connected, but how so is truly a mystery.

I think photography can be a kind of art, but I think it need not be. One can take photographs artfully, which is to say with great care and nuance. Or one can try to make art with one's photos. Certainly photographers who know their craft (and I am not one of these) can produce dramatic and aesthetically pleasing images.

When photography slides into art is a great question, but perhaps intent actually does matter. I think the more photography challenges are preexisting conceptions of things, the closer it is. I could go on and on, but I'm called away by my pesky job!

Obviously, I think your work is "good art". That's why I have turned into the woman from "Misery" and become "your #1 fan." Unfortunately, I have little contact with artists (and I know that is unhealthy) and I work with morons who refer to the student work as "colorings". I have been reading a book called "Art and Fear". I am trying to find part of my "artistic self" again. So, when I felt such an aesthetic connection to your work,...it was so good to talk and think about art again...
Anyway. I took pictures of the painting I am currently working on. It's on my FB photos. I am birthing a Madonna, and trying not to feel shame.
She's not quite done, but since I respect your opinion...please check her out. I had trouble taking the picture because of lighting. : )
