dark night of the soul

Yo Mike.

This is a great shot and LOVE the title. Saint John of the Cross, nice reference.

How often is it the case that a period of darkness for one's soul is a necessary precondition for so many meaningful things in life?--e.g better self-understanding, a spiritual experience with the Divine, the intellectual life?

Of course, underlying this is the assumption that we do actually possess such a thing as a soul.

Thanks, bro. My title was a little shout out to my theology-driven men friends. (you and your "kind" mentor.)

it's often the case. mostly we go about our business, thinking today what we thought yesterday. when something shocks our system, it creates room for new thoughts and new way of looking at things to enter.

and as for the soul, it's one of those very few theological topics i don't find all that interesting. of course we have a soul. even if it's not permanent. or even if it's just the same as our mind. and even if it's just material. it's that something important--even that fictitious something--that we think that makes us whole. or at least allows us to view us as a single thing--even if that single thing isn't whole.
