having some contrast makes all the difference in the world, doesn't it? that applies to so many situations other than photography, as well.

contrast. yes, i think that's why clouds are so interesting, especially storm clouds, clouds with lots of "texture." i love clouds in which you can see the three-dimensionality of the cloud in great relief. and what allows that is not only the texture in the cloud but the subtle shades of white, gray, and black that occur when the texture plays with the light

contrast. here's an interesting thing. in important ways the very best things are improved by things worse than them. and not merely by comparision, either. hmmm...how can i explain this. well, steak is good (if you're willing to eat animals.) and steak is better to me than, say, a baked potato. but a steak meal with a baked potato is better than a two-steak meal. a comparatively worse thing improves the whole shebang.

now i admit when i first starting writing for this reply i had faith in my ability to say something "interesting," as i promised above. it turns out that that faith was quite misplaced. and a lie to the reader.

but...the idea of contrast and better things and worse things making the whole better than just better things is an interesting idea. it's just that my stab at it (har har) was bad. st. augustine talks about it, and i'll probably talk about it it in a future posting.

but for now i "can't peak too early, you know." (that's a shout out to my dad-in-law. it's one of his favorite sayings. or at least it's one of our favorite sayings of his.)
