I agree, the symbolic nature of water within the Bible has always intrigued me, and is one of which I have always desired to study extensively. It seems that water is consistently used for the purpose of separation through redemption and condemnation. For instance, take the separating waters of the Red Sea in which God redeemed the people of Israel while destroying the Eqyptians. Or the killing waters of the flood that saved (redeemed) Noah and his family, yet killed the wicked. Even the first mention of water within the creation account, God essentially separates these chaotic waters. Likewise, we should view the water rite of baptism as setting us apart.
