Inside: Photos of eyeballs, bees, eyeballs, blue hands, and eyeballs. Also inside: Thoughts I want you to read and to live by and, when especially inspired, to set to opera. I think it is because we know that our picture doesn't capture the real beauty of the real thing. We try to doctor it to make our poor copy into something closer to the original. This is why I am always taking pictures of trees in the fall - I'm always trying to find the perfect picture that truly captures the amazing color and texture and sound and smell of fall leaves.
Good point, technoprarie. On the other hand, surely pictures certainly reveal (or create) beauty that was not there obviously before, such as the famous shot of the milk drop that looks like a crown at the instant of impact.
