man, that 2001 scene was just inspired, wasn't it?

so here's an honest question: do you think that art has to make sense for it to be art? this is surely one of those opinions about which well-intended folks can disagree.

from a science fiction lover, a comparision to 2001 is a compliment. 2001 is one of my favorite movies.

And in my opinion, art has to make some kind of sense. It doesn't have to make the same kind of sense to everyone. Everyone doesn't have to see the monolith to make your picture art, but I think it has to make some kind of sense. That is why I never can get into art where it is just a big canvas all painted red. I want a "story" that I can see in art. I don't have to agree with the story, but I want to see it in the picture or sculpture.

i think most people would agree with you. it certainly characterizes a lot of our culture's best art over the centuries.
