Like the Planet of the Apes

We've all noticed old and untraveled roads covered with vegetation. It's remarkable to me how quickly nature can swallow up or erase the works of man. All right, so here's a scenario and a question: Every person on the planet disappears or drops dead immediately. How many years would it take before all traces of man's endeavors--from the garden we planted to the Great Wall of China to the Empire State building--would disappear from sight? Thousands? Millions? Billions?

Dear ProfessorMike,

I once read an article from some reputable magazine that posed that question. They looked at three structures and guessed when they would fall down if man just disappeared. The first was the UN building. It would fall in less than 2 dozen years due to water seeping into the basement and eventually causing the foundation to fail. The Arch in St Louis would stand for 300 years until a tornado directly hit it. And the Grand Coolee Dam would stand for thousands. Many thanks to my dh for remembering the details I couldn't remember.
